About Us
Studio Emrys is a home-based ceramics studio in SE Portland where we make our own work and teach small-group classes for kids and adults.
We built the studio around the kind of environment we wanted to work and teach in: calm, focused, and personal. Class sizes are intentionally limited so there’s time to ask questions, work at your own pace, and get individual guidance.
That scale is intentional. It gives us room to teach closely, make our own work, and stay connected to the materials and processes at the center of both.
Teaching & experience
Studio Emrys is run by Zoe Farabaugh and Jeff Hulme. Jeff has nearly 20 years of experience working with clay, primarily on the wheel. Zoe comes from a background in design and product development, with a particular focus on ceramic materials, glaze research, and testing.
We teach all of the classes ourselves, bringing different backgrounds and perspectives to the way we make and teach.
Working With Kids
The studio is shaped in part by personal experience raising and supporting kids with anxiety and sensory sensitivities. This is not a therapeutic program, but we're thoughtful about how environment and structure affect learning.
Kids classes are small and predictable, with room for individual needs. Our classes are a great fit for kids who prefer smaller groups and quieter learning environments.
Our Work
Alongside teaching, we make our own functional ceramics here in the studio. Our work is wheel thrown and hand built in small batches, with an emphasis on pieces made to be used every day.
Much of our time in the studio is spent developing and refining our own forms, glazes, and finishes. We make our glazes in-house and work through lots of testing and iteration as we develop new surfaces and combinations.
We release new work in small batches, along with occasional studio samples and experimental pieces.
Location & Studio Space
Studio Emrys is a home-based ceramics studio in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood of Southeast Portland. Exact location details are shared with registered students.
Classes take place in our basement studio, with dedicated spaces for making and glazing. Access to the studio involves stairs, and the space is not wheelchair accessible at this time. If you have questions about access or whether the space will work for you or your child, please reach out before registering.
